ProposalDescription:

ARCHAEOLOGICAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT (AIA) FOR THE PROPOSED NIGEL BULK WATER PIPELINE PHASE 2 PROJECT IN THE NIGEL AREA OF THE EKURHULENI METROPOLITAN MUNICIPALITY, GAUTENG PROVINCE

Expanded_Motivation:

The proposed project entails the upgrade of an existing pipeline over two sections and is situated within a road reserve and underneath a railway line. The diameter of the proposed pipeline will be 750mm and the peak throughput of the bulk water transported will be 500 litres/second at a velocity of 1.7 meters/second. It appears as though the pipeline will cross numerous water courses, some appearing to be non-perennial. Furthermore, the proposed project will occur within 500m of some water features in the area. The proposed upgrade is planned over the following alignments: - 4.2km in a north-south direction from the existing reservoir in Dunnottar southwards. - 1.2km an east-west direction along the R42 road in the Nigel Central Business District (CBD). For the project, two alternative routes are considered: Alternative 1 follows the initial route as proposed by the Applicant taking into account the proximity of available connection points to the reservoir, avoidance of any sensitivities on site as initially determined and alignment with surrounding land uses where possible. Alternative 2 (Preferred) This realigned pipeline route is considered the preferred alternative as this route incorporates necessary conservation measures for graves along the alignment.
