Case Type:

ProposalDescription:

Permit Application to Conduct A Ground-Penetrating Radar Survey and Test Excavations at Site 2-3 to be impacted on by the approved 100mw Pv Plant at the Samancor Chrome Operations, Steelpoort, Limpopo

Expanded_Motivation:

Royal HaskoningDHV (PTY) LTD has appointed PGS Heritage (Pty) Ltd on behalf of the Samancor Chrome Operations to assist with investigating and mitigating a potential cemetery affected by the approved 100MW PV Plant. As part of this mitigation, PGS wish to conduct a Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey and test excavations to determine if the structures identified during the Heritage Impact Assessment are graves. Subsequent footprint layouts, considering the locality of the heritage sites, then indicated that the potential burial ground at Site 2-3 will be adversely impacted. Although the HIA recommended a 30-meter buffer around the potential burial ground it is impossible to exclude this site from the approved footprint area. To mitigate this impact, the client resolved to appoint PGS to investigate the potential burial ground and, through GPR and test excavation to determine the presence of graves. NOTE 1: THE PROPOSED PHOTOVOLTAIC PLANT WAS AUTHORISED THROUGH AN ENVIRONMENTAL AUTHORISATION DATED 25 APRIL 2022 (DOCUMENT LOADED ON SAHRIS AND AVAILABLE UNDER CASEID 16690). NOTE 2: THE REST OF THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES RELATING TO PV AREAS 3-5, AS ASSESSED IN THE HIA ARE ALREADY UNDER MITIGATION THROUGH PERMIT ID3647
