Case Type:

ProposalDescription:

It is proposed to sample three archaeological sites, two of them Later Stone Age artefact scatters and the third a historical scatter possibly linked to the Anglo-Boer War. Northern Cape

Expanded_Motivation:

The three sites are the only significant archaeological sites identified within the final footprint of the facility and will be difficult to fully avoid and protect. Because they are not highly significant archaeological sites, mitigation is appropriate. This will take the form of establishing an alpha-numeric grid over the sites using long tape measures and collecting artefacts from the various squares. For the historical site (DPD2013/009) the artefacts will be collected from the surface by hand with each square thoroughly examined. The scatter is quite low density and no subsurface deposits are expected on the rocky hill. The LSA sites have denser artefact scatters and due to the small size of many of them a sieve will be employed to try and capture all the smallest artefacts from the minimal sandy patches on the rocky hills. A 1.5mm sieve will be used unless this, for some reason, this becomes impractical in which case a 3mm sieve would be used. A trowel and pan would be used to collect the sand from the surface. No subsurface deposits are expected but should any be encountered they would be sampled appropriately to ensure that the sites are properly sampled.
