Changes to SAHRIS!

Following comments received on the proposed Revised Schedule of Fees for applications made to the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA), made in terms of Section 25(2)(l) of the National Heritage Resources Act No. 25 of 1999 (NHRA) and published in the Government Gazette of 22 July 2022, SAHRA hereby publishes the final Revised Schedule of Fees for Applications made to SAHRA. Applications for provision of services submitted to the South African Heritage Resources Authority (SAHRA), in terms of the National Heritage Resources Act, No. 25 of 1999 (NHRA) must be accompanied by a payment of the appropriate fee, taking effect from 1 January 2023

Bone Histology Application for Diictodon

In an ongoing study of the ontogenetic development of the Permian dicynodont Diictodon, we are applying for a permit to perform histological analyses on limb bone material. This will aid in filling the gaps in the ontogenetic series and furthering our understanding of the osteological development of this unique South African species.

Expanded_Motivation: 

As part of an ongoing study on the ontogenetic development of Diictodon feliceps currently undertaken by Caitlin Rabe (Doctoral candidate in the University of Cape Town’s Department of Biological Sciences) and supervised by Prof. Anusuya Chinsamy-Turan (UCT) and Prof. Roger Smith (Iziko South African Museum), we request that you consider our application to perform destructive analyses on a sample of postcranial material. The bone histology of Diictodon, as it relates to ontogeny, biomechanics and phylogeny has been previously studied1,2,3. However, these studies sampled only a few specimens of Diictodon, and the ontogenetic series examined by Ray & Chinsamy (2004) consisted of only 13 specimens that represent the upper half of the Diictodon size range, excluding neonates and small juvenile specimens. To have a comprehensive understanding of the ontogenetic development of Diictodon we need to section material from the underrepresented juvenile specimens and tuskless specimens, so that our histological data accurately represents the diversity of known Diictodon specimens. After spending considerable time in the Iziko Karoo palaeontology collection, we have identified specimens that would be valuable candidates for histological analysis (see Section A figures). Please note that where possible specimens have been selected in which the postcranial material is already exposed and exhibits existing breaks. The portion of material being removed will be approximately 0.5-1cm in width, depending on the size of the specimen. Samples will not be taken from regions of the bone that contain diagnostic or useful features, rather limited to flat areas, or portions on the midshaft of long bones. In accordance with the policies and procedures of the Iziko SAM, where it is deemed appropriate based on the morphological value of a skeletal element, we will undertake to produce cast reconstructions of the sectioned material.
