Development Type:

ProposalDescription:

The Mantsopa Local Municipality requires building material to be used in construction projects for the upgrading of various infrastructure in the surrounding area. Therefore, a borrow pit/ gravel quarry is proposed in order to source the above mentioned construction material.

Expanded_Motivation:

The proposed site consists of undulating hills comprised of weathered dolerite, meaning the intrusions can be classified as horizontal sill layers. This means that the 5ha borrow pit area will be a uniform block, starting at a specified point, mining into the higher topography. The site is easily accessible from a well- developed unnamed gravel road leading straight into the town of Hobhouse. Please refer to Appendix 4 which contains the site locality map. The purpose of registering a borrow pit will be for the supply of construction materials for the surrounding area. Only mobile and temporary structures will be used during the operational period of the borrow pit which includes the office site and space for vehicle parking of ± 0, 5 ha. A 900 m fence will be erected around the borrow pit totalling a surface area of approximately 4, 4 ha. The site will impact an area of approximately 4, 5 ha. Due to the nature of the material (weathered dolerite) only Excavators and TLBs will be used in the extraction process. Mining of dolerite will be executed as a shallow surface mining operation which makes “cuts” or a minable faces to mine before moving on to the next cut. No blasting will be required.
