ProposalDescription:

Proposed excavation of human remains exposed during construction of Greater Mpofana Pipeline project from Bruntville to Spring Groove Dam in Rosetta within uMngungundlovu District Municipality of KwaZulu Natal

Expanded_Motivation:

The grave site and its contents were accidentally disturbed during construction of a pipeline. After the exposure, SAPS and Amafa officials inspected the site and collected the remains. Amafa recommended that, in addition to a wide consultative public participation process (PPP), an archaeologist must be retained to assess the site and recover any remains that may still be scattered within the development area. During PPP one family came forward and claim the remains. They also raised concern about the remains of their deceased relatives which are scattered around the site and some which are at the SAPS, and others at Amafa. The affected family and the community in general are not happy with the status quo especially regarding remains which are alleged to have been left at the site. They have been pleading that all the remains must be kept in one place, and reburial must be initiated instantly to allow for the spirit of their deceased relatives to rest. In addition, communities are concerned that since the rain season is approaching, the remains may be washed away by rain. Burial sites and their contents are accorded the highest heritage accolades in South Africa, and are often the focus of emotional and ethical sentiments to people. Dealing with human remains thus requires the highest ethical standards. The South African National Heritage Resource Act and the World Archaeological Congress has set ethical standards for the treatment of human remains. It is on that note that we request Amafa to instantly issue a permit to allow for investigation on this remains to be initiated. The permit will also ensure that we collect the remains from the Police and store them at one place, from which plans of reburial will begun.
