ProposalDescription:

Destruction Application for site York-001 on Portion 11 of the farm York 279, Hotazel, in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District Municipality, Northern Cape Province,

Expanded_Motivation:

The archaeological site comprises an abandoned four roomed structure constructed prior to 1914. This structure is situated approximately 130m east of the Ga-Mogara River. The original dwelling is constructed with neatly cut calcrete blocks of various sizes. These blocks were not dressed as no chisel marks are visible along the face of each block. It has a concrete floor and cast concrete window lintels. The original HIA indicated that the site will not be impacted by mining. However, over the issuing years, mining activities and overburden storage have resulted in the site being in the way of expansion. The phase 2 documentation of the building consisted of plan and profile drawings. Façades and specific elements were then documented through detailed photographic documentation and description. Refer to the accompanying report for detailed documentation. The structures date between 1908 and 1915 when the first farm settlements occurred along the Ga-Mogara river, as described in the background research to the structure. The farm York was surveyed and proclaimed in 1914 and according to the evaluation by the architectural historian, the structure predates the First World War (1914-1918). No monitoring during the destruction of the site will be required.
