ProposalDescription:

Proposed development has lead to the need to relocate approximately 8-12 graves in the development area. Indications are that the graves are less then 60 years of age, however an number of them are unmarked and may be older. Hence this permit application is precautionary.

Expanded_Motivation:

An exhaustive study has been done to determine the age of the graves, the majority of which consist of cobblestone decorated mounds and are unmarked. Two have simple cast concrete head stones which indicates that the incumbents were buried in the 1990's. The cemetery is ,located in a disused farm workers camp which was built in the 1960s. Before that it was agricultural land as indicated by sequencing of historical aerial photographs. It is assumed the cemetery started in the 1960's but we cant be sure. Indications are the the graves are of no archaeological interest, therefore the relocation should be done by an undertakers as per the 2014 regulations of the National Health Act. Arrangements are in progress to advertise for affected parties to comment. It is proposed that the human remains be relocated to Klapmuts cemetery. The property owner has purchased Klein Babylonstooren (formerly part of Backsberg) and wishes to construct hospitality cottages on the site.
