ProposalDescription:

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport (DOT) propose to construct a new bridge within Ward 9 of the Msinga Local Municipality, Umzinyathi District Municipality. The L3097 Bridge will be located in the Muden/Ophate area at the following point location, 28°55'48.53"S 30°20'4.94"E. The bridge will be constructed across a river and riparian area in the upper reaches of the Ophate Valley. The L3097 Road is a local access road that services the Ophate area. The road intercepts the Ophate River that currently has no crossings infrastructure in place. Both pedestrians and vehicles cross the bed of this watercourse in times of high flow which becomes dangerous for vehicles and pedestrians. The bridge proposed for this crossing on the L3097 Road will comprise of a 62m long, single lane, five pier bridge. The bridge structure will have 5 piers, 2 abutments with wing walls on either side the crossing. A walkway will be provided on the deck next to the single lane. Reno-matresses will be placed at the outlet within the watercourse bed. The five pillars will be placed within the river channel and be anchored into the bedrock. This will therefore entail the infill and removal of more than 10m3 of material from a watercourse which requires environmental authorisation.
