ProposalDescription:

Mafube Coal Mining (Pty) Ltd (Mafube) is located in the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality of Mpumalanga (STLM). Mafube is currently expanding its operations as part of the Life Extension (Lifex) Project to exploit the Nooitgedacht coal reserves on the farms Nooitgedacht 417 JS and Roodepoort 418 JS. This Project will impact 369 graves within 12 burial grounds (graveyards, GY) in the Project area. There are 292 graves in nine burial grounds within the current and planned Life of Mine (LoM) and 60 graves in three burial grounds within the current buffer of the planned Lifex Project. The graves in the affected cemetery are older than 60 years old, thus the need to appoint an archaeologist to apply for heritage permits with the South African Heritage Resources Agency Burial Grounds and Grave Unit (SAHRA BGG).

Expanded_Motivation:

Mafube Coal Mining (Pty) Ltd owns and operates the Mafube Coal Mine in Mpumalanga Province. As part of its plan to expand its mining activities, Mafube is also looking to minimise or eliminate adverse Health, Safety and Security (CHS&S) impacts. These impacts include blasting and associated vibrations and fly-rock; increased noise levels; Increased incidences of road traffic accidents between mine vehicles, local people and livestock; changes to ambient air quality due to increased dust emissions; a decreased sense of place owing to changes in the landscape; and reduced quality of life due to the overall changes in the environment. Over the years, Mafube has implemented several mitigation measures to avoid, reduce, and manage such impacts. However, due to the Lifex Project, these measures will no longer be sufficient to address these impacts. Therefore, tier 1 mitigation measures need to be undertaken, such as: Resettling households; exhuming, relocating and reburying graves located close to or near high impact areas. As a result of the project, 369 graves will be affected. This includes unclaimed and claimed graves and 18 graves whose locations require confirmation.
