ProposalDescription:

Nomination for declaration of the Makgabeng cultural and natural heritage landscape as a National Heritage site. The area is currently the focus of platinum mining that will threaten to destroy this invaluable heritage, hence this application also seeks provisional protection as the application for nomination is in process. The Makgabeng plateau, located in the Blouberg Local Municipality, Capricorn district Limpopo Province bears significant archaeological, historical and natural value in both the history and biosphere of South Africa. The Makgabeng plateau is home to close to 1000 rock art sites collectively attributed to San hunter-gatherers, Khoekhoen herders and Northern Sotho farmer groups. It is one of the very few areas in South Africa, apart from a few sites in the Soutpansberg, where these three rock art traditions co-occur at the same site, sometimes overlapping or juxtaposed; a clear indication of interaction of these groups on the plateau. Today descendant populations of these and other groups inhabit the plateau attach various values to this heritage. Makagbeng plateau is situated in Blouberg Local Municipality, Capricorn District,Limpopo Province, South Africa.
