Case Type:

ProposalDescription:

The proposed research will examine the Middle Iron Age archaeology of Klein Bolayi, in the Limopo Valley, focusing on four sites, EV01, EV03, EV05 and EV10. This research represents part of a larger comparative project that is examining hinterland communities in the Great Mapungubwe Landscape. Fieldwork will be undertaken as part of the University of Pretoria fieldschool for postgraduate students.

Expanded_Motivation:

The rationale for this research therefore lies in the exploration of an underexplored type of archaeology – that of non-elite, hinterland Mapungubwe sites. Whilst there is a good record of excavation of larger sites in the Mapungubwe heartland, these arguably less obvious or ‘rich’ sites have been neglected to some degree. This research therefore aims to re-balance discussion with insight from a broader range of the Mapungubwe social landscape, and extend our evidence beyond the elite. Another motivation for this research is to train UP students in field methods. Fieldschools are an essential aspect of archaeological training, and we anticipate field teams of between 10 and 25 will take part in individual excavation seasons. The applicants have directed a number of UP fieldschools in recent years, including three at Maremani, which fell under this bigger research programme. We therefore have developed a well-established ‘field-school’ template, which involves senior students acting as supervisors, and the new students learning a range of skills in the field. This prior experience also means our senior students are familiar with Mapungubwe-type archaeology and material, helping ensure quality and consistency in the excavations (see also excavation strategy for established methodology).
