Development Type:

ProposalDescription:

eThembeni Cultural Heritage has been appointed by Umgeni Water to facilitate the exhumation and re-interment of graves of people buried at homesteads occurring within the full supply level of the Mvutshane Dam currently under construction within the Mvoti drainage basin at Maphumulo, ILembe District Municipality, KwaZulu-Natal.

Expanded_Motivation:

Current construction of the Mvutshane Dam at Mapumulo, and other municipal approved developments around the boundatries of the dam, will affect the sanctity of the graves of people buried at homesteads destined for moving to new locations or at homesteads abandoned in the recent historical past. Public engagement with the affected families and the eMaqadini Traditional Authority has mapped a consensus way forward. Affected families have agreed to conduct the requisite traditional ceremonies prior to exhumation and that re-interment will take place at either their current places of residence in the valley or at the new residences to be built for those families who will have to move out of the dam basin. All places of re-interment are under the jurisdiction of the eMaqadini T/A and the Ingonyama Trust. Exhumation and re-interment will be undertaken by accredited undertakers having obtained the requisite permits from COGTA and the Department of Health.
