Case Type:

Development Type:

ProposalDescription:

Application for an emergency exhumation permit for retrieval of an exposed burial at the Mvutshane Dam construction site at Maphumulo, ILembe District Municipality, KwaZulu-Natal.

Expanded_Motivation:

A human burial was exposed during ancillary road building operations within the basin of the Mvutshane Dam construction site. Consultation with the Traditional Authority and local community members has failed to identify an extant family claiming ownership of the grave. The grave is located within current and on going construction activity and requires removal to ensure the sanctity of the human remains. Amafa should take custody of these remains unless a claimant family is forthcoming. A Graves and Relocation Policy is in place for the construction phase of the Mvutshane Dam.
