ProposalDescription:

To test feasibility and yield of palaeoproteomic investigation of dental enamel samples collected from the sites and strata returning P. robustus samples, exclusively non-hominin mammalian teeth will initially be processed. I am requesting with your permission to access loose and/or fragmented faunal teeth for destructive analysis – i.e. to collect dental enamel. For the materials housed at the Evolutionary Studies Institute (ESI), I am requesting faunal teeth (n=5), which were carefully selected with the help of the curator Bernhard Zipfel. The specimens I wish to collect are: SKX 3730, SKX 4996 a, SKX 6194, SKX 37041 and CD.5410. These faunal species are quite common in the areas collected and are not holotypes or rare finds nor are the faunal teeth of morphological significance. These specimens are found in Swartkrans from Members 1-3, where Paranthropine material has also been found. Furthermore, CD.5410 was discovered in Locality D, where a Paranthropus robustus RM2 had been retrieved.
