Case Type:

Development Type:

ProposalDescription:

The Strand Jetty was built in 1934 and as a result has formal heritage status in terms of the South African Heritage Resources Act. Due to its age and resultant increasing damage and deterioration, the jetty is no longer serviceable and poses a risk to any member of the public who may try and access it. Restoration of the jetty was estimated in excess of R30 million which was not considered financially viable at the time. Previous Case ID: 12502 As the SAHRA permit has expired, any further demolition of the jetty would require a new application.

Expanded_Motivation:

Multiple meetings have been held between City line departments as well as with the SAHRA to discuss and agree on the way forward for the jetty. In terms of the meetings it was agreed by line departments and the SAHRA that the Stand Jetty will be: • Left in place as part of our collective coastal heritage • Allowed to slowly decay over time, unless sufficient funds are committed to restore it • As the condition of the jetty deteriorates over time, weakened and damaged components of the structure will be removed and dismantled to prevent overt public safety risks – a SAHRA permit for these actions will be required • Weakened and damaged components will be assessed at minimum annually, at the end of winter each year (October) or after any significant damage after coastal storm events
