ProposalDescription:

Permit application for the permanent export of Gerard Sekoto's painting "In the Beer Hall", lodged by Aspire Art Auctions. The painting is proposed for export and sale on auction at the Piasa Auction house in Paris, France.

Expanded_Motivation:

The applicant, Aspire Art Auctions lodges this application on behalf of the owner Mrs Shirely Sergay for a permanent export permit for the following object In the beer hall by Gerard Sekoto which is due to be sold on Auction at Piasa Auction house in Paris, France. This application is for the purpose of exporting the painting titled In the beer hall by artist Gerard Sekoto to be sent to Piasa auction house in Paris to be sold on auction on 24 June 2020. The object of this application is a painting by South African artist Gerard Sekoto titled In the beer hall, being exported for the purposes of sale by auction. The painting is being exported to Piasa auction house in Paris, France. Due to the time constraints of this auction being conducted on 24 June 2020, the painting will need to leave Aspire's Johannesburg offices by Wednesday 3 June 2020. The artist who produced this painting, Gerard Sekoto, left South Africa in 1947 and relocated to Paris, France. Paris being the artist's ultimate home and the place he died, makes a compelling argument for why this work should be permitted to be sold in that city.
