ProposalDescription:

The applicant Jeannine Dickson lodges this Permit Application on behalf of the owner African Sky Trust, for temporary export of 2 paintings by Ernest Mancoba (COMPOSITION and UNTITLED) for loan to Centre Pompidou, France, for the exhibition ERNEST MANCOBA.

Expanded_Motivation:

The applicant Jeannine Dickson lodges this Permit Application on behalf of the owner African Sky Trust, for the temporary export of 2 paintings by Ernest Mancoba, titled COMPOSITION and UNTITLED, for loan to Centre Pompidou, France, to be included in the exhibition ERNEST MANCOBA. The exhibition, curated by Alicia Knock, runs from 26 June to 23 September 2019 and is the first international posthumous retrospective of the work of Ernest Mancoba(1904-2002), South African artist who settled in Europe from 1938. Beyond his long-debated involvement in Cobra, the exhibition traces the artist's trajectory and life between South Africa, France and Denmark. At the same time the Centre Pompidou will present a parallel exhibition on Sonja Ferlov-Mancoba (1911-1984), Mancoba's wife. The loan period is from 6 June to 15 October 2019 to allow sufficient time for safe transport and installation of the paintings. We recognize that this is a short time in which to approve this permit application, however, this is a significant exhibition of Mancoba's life and work at a prestigious venue that will enhance the understanding of this important South African artist, and the African Sky Trust would like to support this exhibition through this loan. The African Sky Trust will request that copies of promotional material, articles, and any other relevant material, to be sent by the Pompidou for both SAHRA and the African Sky Trust Archives.
