ProposalDescription:

Phase 2 archaeological mitigation for the Nkomati Anthracite Mine, Nkomazi Local Municipality, in the Ehlanzeni District Municipality, Mpumalanga Province (CASEID 14506)

Expanded_Motivation:

The large multi-phase site NKM-A-005 (with points NKM-A-005a to NKM-A-005e as described in the HIA) contains several components of different periods, including possible Mid-to -Late Iron Age. The site has a medium heritage significance rating. As part of the HIA, the impact assessment concluded that expanding the open cast mine will destroy the site. An assessment of the site has identified at least three large middens containing a mix of decorated and undecorated potsherds. Also identified is bone (butchered, burnet and unburnt), mostly associated with bovids. Structures that were identified during the field assessment were possible hut floors and grain bin platforms; this will be confirmed during the excavations. To collect a representative sample of the archaeological material on-site for analysis to determine temporal localisation, cultural affiliation and possible social structure and layout of the settlement, the following will be done: - vegetation will be cleared to expose the extent of the settlement; - a ground-penetrating radar (GPR) survey of the site will be conducted in selected areas to determine the presence of subsurface structures such as hut structures and grain pits; - such structures will be investigated through excavations conforming to archaeological techniques; - at least three excavation squares will be set out and excavated on the identified middens. It is, however, possible that further investigative excavations will be done depending on the finds after vegetation clearing; - where possible samples for C14 dating will be collected and on completion of the excavations sent for C14 dating at a South African Facility - all artefacts and material collected will be marked and labelled, and packed for transportation to our laboratory at our office in Pretoria - the material will be cleaned, analysed and finally accessioned for storage; - the material will then be submitted to the Lydenburg Museum for curation after completion of the field report - PGS will submit a final excavation report on the SAHRIS case for closing of the permit
