ProposalDescription:

Proposed new ash disposal site for the Kriel Power Station, Mpumalanga province

Expanded_Motivation:

Kriel Power Station is a 3000 MW base load coal fired power station, consisting of 6 units, and is located in Mpumalanga province. Ash is generated as a by-product for electricity generation due to the combustion of coal from the power station. This ash is being disposed by means of ‘wet ashing’ (disposing of ash mixed with water) within the premises of the Kriel Power Station. A Basic Assessment Report (BAR), and associated Waste Management Licence (WML) processes, are being undertaken for feasible alternative new ash disposal site for the Kriel Power Station. The application for the new Ash Disposal Facility is separate from this application, but must be explained in order to describe the situation and the need for the Monitored Trial Embankment.
