Case Type:

ProposalDescription:

A Conditional Assessment of five building precincts on Robben Island is underway by the Charles Consult Consortium. The Consortium comprises Charles Consult, Osmond Lange Architects + Planners and Bosch Projects. The five building precincts are as follows: •  Old Maximum Security Prison; •  The Kramat; •  The Ou Tronk / Trade Training Unit; •  Old Medium Security Prison - now the Multi-Purpose Learning Centre (MPLC); •  Old School (Pre-Primary School). The composition and make-up of the original stones, mortars, plasters and concretes used to construct these buildings needs to be determined. This relates particularly to the compatibility (or otherwise) of the existing materials with any proposed restoration materials and methods. Robben Island, Western Cape

Expanded_Motivation:

It is proposed to extract the necessary core samples using a 52 mm dia core drill. A total of about 25 cores are envisaged – due to the range and number of buildings involved. The service provider who has been identified to carry out the materials testing is The South African Institute for Heritage Science and Conservation (SAIHS+C). The samples would be removed from carefully selected positions in each of the building precincts to minimise the visual impact. The samples will then need to be removed from the island to a laboratory on the mainland for formal analysis. The necessary remedial work required at the 25 test sample sites needs to be discussed and agreed with the service provider.
