ProposalDescription:

Application to refurbish and do interior insertions to the east wing of the rampart artillery rooms at the Old Fort, Constitution Hill, Johannesburg, Gauteng Province. The refurbished space will be repurposed for use as a professional recording studio facility.

The interior fit-out will be non-intrusive and reversible fittings to use the space as a recording studio contributing to public and educational programmes of Constitution Hill. The series of the rampart rooms located on the east wing of the Old Fort building designed for military use (from accommodation, ammunition storage and stabling food. These underground rooms were serviced with electricity and a telecommunications network. These rampart rooms are currently used for occasional temporary exhibitions and do not form part of the tour experience of Constitution Hill. The creation of a music studio and locating it at Constitution Hill will contribute to the ongoing integration of Constitution Hill with the surrounding communities especially Hillbrow. A recording studio would provide a facility to record oral history and become a world class music recording studio that re-invigorate a unique, historical Old Fort Space in line with Constitution Hill objectives. Preservation: The existing East passageway length will be left open without any new interior interventions. This preserve the existing texture and quality of the space. No Fixings: The will be no attachments to the building structure, walls, floors or soffit. The Structural engineer will design a removable steel frame cage that will fit inside the vaulted series of the Rampart Rooms. These Steel Structures will sit on the floor with rubber pads. All the interior finishes, including the acoustic panel will attach to this steel framework. In addition to the steel frame, a rubber timber floor will be used. Dry walls structures will be fixed on top of this floor. This allows for the interior insertions to be reversible in the future and with no fixings to the heritage structure ensuring full preservation. Doors: All existing doors will be kept in place and renovated where required.
