ProposalDescription:

PGS Heritage (Pty) Ltd was appointed by the Msobo Coal Mine to effect the relocation of 15 graves located in four different areas containing informal burial grounds located on the farm Verkeerdepan 50 IT and Witrand 52 IT, near Carolina, Mpumalanga.

Expanded_Motivation:

The burial ground will be impacted by the expansion of coal mining by the Msobo Coal Mine. We have conducted a process of stakeholder engagement to identify buried individuals and to obtain permission for exhumation and re-interment from the affected families, communities and other bona fide interested and affected parties. This process commenced on Wednesday, 25 September 2019 with the erection of bilingual (English and isiZulu) site notices at the burial ground. Bilingual (English and isiZulu) newspaper notices were published in the Daily Sun on 05 November 2019 and in the Highvelder on 08 and 15 November 2019 respectively. The details of the persons buried in the areas outlined above can be found in the grave register. The graves will be relocated to the cemeteries as requested by the families. If the features are confirmed graves after the test excavation they will be relocated to the closest municipal cemetery. Mosaic Funeral Group will be responsible for the handling and reburial of the exhumed human remains. The burial grounds and graves are located in the following four areas that will be affected by the mining activities: • Portion 1 of the farm Verkeerdepan 50 IT (VP1) – GPS Coordinates: -26.141738⁰ and 30.024142⁰ This burial ground contains 4 graves and 1 feature that could possibly be a grave but need to be test excavated to confirm the presence of a grave. • Portion 1 of the farm Verkeerdepan 50 IT (VP2) – GPS Coordinates: -26.140621⁰ and 30.024552⁰ This area contains two graves that were damaged accidentally by mining activities, the surface features are not present anymore but extensive test excavations will be done in the area to locate the graves. • Portion 0 of the farm Verkeerdepan 50 IT (VP3) – GPS Coordinates: -26.137524⁰ and 30.024365⁰ The burial ground contains 5 graves and 1 feature that could possibly be a grave but need to be test excavated to confirm the presence of a grave. • Portion 5 of the farm Witrand 52 IT (VP4) – GPS Coordinates: -26.130901⁰ and 30.053832⁰ This area contains 2 possible graves that need to be test excavated to confirm the presence of graves. The graves located on these two farms have been positively identified by the affected families were the graves could positively be confirmed and a signed request form and affidavit for the relocation for each grave has been provided.
