ProposalDescription:

This proposal follows the final report submitted to SARHA (via the online SAHRIS system) on monady the 25th of june 2018. This proposal is submitted in order to renew the permit issued (under the ID 2036, on friday June 05, 2015), to Dr Francis Thackeray in collaboration with Dr José Braga (Université de Toulouse,France) for excavations at the site of Kromdraai (Gauteng Province).

Expanded_Motivation:

The new Kromdraai specimens (with a KW prefix) will be curated at the Evolutionary Studies Institute at Wits, as before. We maintain cordial relations with Dr Zipfel and the staff at Wits. Motivationl to continue fieldwork and research (July 2018- July 2021). 1. We intend to extend the excavation at Kromdraai in the Cradle of Humankind, both in terms of depth and lateral extent. 2. We intend to supplement the current faunal assemblage, including hominins, bovids, equids, microfauna, carnivores and non-hominin primates. 3. We are confident that we will discover more non-hominin fauna that will allow us to reconstruct Plio-Pleistocene palaeo-environments 4. We are confident that we will discover more Plio-Pleistocene hominins, including both Paranthropus and early Homo, and that we will be in a stronger position to address taxonomic questions and phylogeny. The owner of the Kromdraai farm, Mr Lotz, has given to F Thackeray and J Braga his full approval and verbal permission to work on his property. We expect a formal letter confirming his continued approval for future excavations at the site. M Lotz will send F Thackeray and J Braga a letter granting permission to continue fieldwork.
