ProposalDescription:

Repair and restoration of Conservatory staircases at the Durban Botanic Gardens, 9 John Zikhali Rd and 6 Problem Mkhize Rd, Rem of erf 3174 and erf 3176, Durban, Kwa-Zulu Natal. Refer to MJL-DWGS (prepared for quotation)

Expanded_Motivation:

The repair and restoration of the Jubilee Conservatory (1898-1946) staircases in the upper terraces of the Durban Botanic Gardens is urgently needed to prevent further degradation and failure. The damage has been caused by water ingress and plant roots. Although the roots and plants have been removed on a regular basis, permanent damage has been caused. The plasterwork has delaminated and the stairs cracked in places. A specialist restoration contractor has been recommended for the work. They will remove the plaster and replicate all profiles. Existing bricks are to be reused in the the construction. Partial dismantling and reconstruction may be necessary in places, but will be avoided where possible. Additional drainage channels on the exterior sides of the balustrade walls is proposed to prevent water ingress.
