ProposalDescription:

We would like to film the archeological excavations taking place at Sibudu cave for an educational television programme to be aired on German television in 2024. This site in Kwa Zulu Natal is of great importance in the evolutionary history of humans and we would therefore very much like to portray it in our documentary.

Expanded_Motivation:

"How do we know?" is a new educational TV format created by SWR (a German public broadcasting corporation) that takes viewers behind the scenes of scientific research. Where most other programmes simply state the latest findings, we look at the process and show the methods by which the researchers come to their conclusions. In our first series (5 episodes, 20 mins each) we accompany anthropologists in their quest to uncover the human evolutionary tree and learn more about our ancestors. Nicholas Conard and his team are our protagonists. We would very much like to document their work at Sibudu cave. This site is, of course, one of great importance for human evolutionary research and will therefore feature prominently in our documentary programme. At the site, we will of course tread very carefully and only move in such areas that the scientists see fit. We will also not be there unaccompanied. We would always be supervised by the researchers. Can you give us your permission for this project? We propose to film there on 3 days during daylight hours on March 9th, 10th and 12th, 2023.
