ProposalDescription:

Proposed 40 MW Riemvasmaak Hydropower Station, Orange River, Northern Cape

Expanded_Motivation:

RVM 1 Hydro Electric Power (Pty) Ltd intends to construct a 40 Megawatt (MW) hydropower station on the Orange River, on the Portion 1 of Farm no. 498 (Riemvasmaak) ) and Remainder of Farm no. 497 (within the boundary of the Augrabies Falls National Park), north of the Augrabies Falls and approximately 40 km North West of Kakamas in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. A BA process was initially conducted for two 10MW stations. Based on comments received and a change in the Department of Energy’s (DoE) Independent Power Producer Process (IPPP), which meant that larger hydropower projects could be put forward, a decision was made to upgrade the BA process to an S&EIA process to provide for additional stakeholder engagement and to increase the capacity of the proposed project from 20MW to 40MW. The project comprises a low diversion weir on the Orange River, a buried headrace, a headpond, an underground powerhouse, and am underground tailrace back into a palaeo-channel of the Orange River. An HIA was conducted for the BA phase of the project's development, the findings of which are relevant to the S&EIA phase because it covered all areas that will be affected by the current project.
