ProposalDescription:

The battle of Talana Hill, the first major battle of the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902), was fought here on October 20, 1899. The location is the only South African museum on a battlefield where structures from the war are still standing. As a result, on December 17, 1982, the land was designated as a National Monument. The museum is housed on the property of one of Dundee's founders, Peter Smith, with all of the old farm buildings still standing and beautifully preserved. The Talana Museum cemetery is divided into three sections: the Smith family and their relatives' graves, the pioneer grave portion, and the military part. Subdivision 727 of Farm Dundee 4339, Dundee District, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa.

Expanded_Motivation:

Talana Museum and Heritage Park is located at the southern foot of Talana Hill on twenty acres of property. The main Talana Museum building is located at the site's southernmost tip, near to the entry from the R33, which runs through Dundee. It is an enormous redbrick structure that houses the national coal mining museum as well as the country's first public glass museum, as well as other notable exhibits. The Talana station complex, the Miners' Rest restaurant, a bronze monument of Mohandas Gandhi, and the Wall of Peace and Reconciliation surround the museum. There is also plenty of public parking, bathrooms, picnic areas, and covered lawns. The Talana Creative Cluster buildings are located to the west and down hill from the main museum building. They feature six additional structures for craftsmen and workshops, as well as a new museum store. The Talana cemetery lies in the center of the site, surrounded on the east by gum trees at the foot of Talana Hill: 'One of the vivid recollections of the fight was the scent of eucalyptus as the gum trees were stripped naked by the Boer rifle fire and the trees sobbed.' The Smith family homestead, which consists of six original structures dating from 1859 to 1924, is located in the property's northern section. From the mid-nineteenth century to the present, the site has original aspects of the growth of a cultural landscape and settlement patterns. It demonstrates a portion of the density, richness, and diversity of cultural elements demonstrating South Africa's, KwaZulu- Natal's, and the Dundee region's human occupancy and evolution. It is linked with the Anglo-Boer War, which influenced international relations as well as the human occupation and evolution of South Africa, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Dundee region. Talana Hill and Battlefield are highly appreciated by members of the international, national, and local communities for social, cultural, and spiritual reasons.
