ProposalDescription:

The existing ablution blocks are situated at the picnic area of the Taung Skull heritage site. The existing toilet blocks were subject to vandalism and are in desperate need of repair. The architectural intervention consists of redesigning the toilets blocks to improve durability, aesthetic integration in the landscape and functionality. The project is divided in 3 main design approaches: 01. replacement of the roof by a concrete slab: the local aggregates will be used to allow the concrete colour to blend in with the surrounding environment 02. New layer of stone wall around the existing brick wall. The stone wall helps the building to integrate with the natural elements around it but also improves the thermal mass and therefore naturally cool the building down. 03. Alterations and natural ventilation: a gap of 800mm is left between the roof and the top of the wall to allow for natural ventilation. A mesh protects the gap from animal intrusions. The toilet is renewed to allow for disabled access.
