ProposalDescription:

The Francesco Podesti Municipal Gallery of Modern Art in Ancona, Italy has requested the loan of 63 works from the Johannesburg Art Gallery collections, for an exhibition entitled Masterpieces from the Johannesburg Art Gallery, from Monet to Warhol, opening in August 2022, and continuing until January 2023.

Expanded_Motivation:

In an effort to foster relationships with accredited institutions internationally, the Directorate: Arts Culture & Heritage under the Community Development department of the City of Johannesburg has entered into a three-year Service Level Agreement with ViDi S.r.l in order to facilitate international loans over the next three years, across Italy and other countries in Europe. The promotion of cultural assets in this manner is in keeping with the reputation and mandate of the Gallery and the City. Establishing good relations with international museums is part of the Gallery’s mandate and ensures the potential for future collaboration and assistance. Loans can be a great strategic advantage for museum collections, as they provide an opportunity for further public access to the artworks, as well as knowledge production around the collections. The 63 artworks requested come from various JAG collections, and as such provide viewers with a wonderful glimpse into the JAG’s holdings, from the original Foundation collection of historical European originals to more contemporary South African artists who look at modern themes and historic moments in the country’s past, as well as artistic themes in South Africa’s rich visual history. These 63 objects are a reflection of the very nature of the way in which JAG has collected in the past, and of the changing political and social ideologies within vibrant heritage collections in a multifaceted country such as ours. ViDi S.r.l has also in the past provide services to the Gallery in kind, through carrying out conservation and restoration work on certain works which were part of previous loans, and thus provide a tangible return in the form of heritage preservation. The City of Johannesburg and the Johannesburg Art Gallery are mentioned across all media platforms and advertising formats for exhibitions such as this, and have received copies of publications produced. The entire cost of the loan, including all costs relating to the travel and accommodation of a courier, is carried by the host organization, and as such, it is a valuable opportunity for the City of Johannesburg to fulfil KPIs and upskill its employees, as well as increasing its international standing with regards to cultural activities without having to use any council funds.
