Development Type:

ProposalDescription:

Proposed 17km double pipeline, 450mm diameter each, to transport rain and seepage water from the North Pit at the Mogalakwena Mine to a storage dam on the mine (Dam 1160), Portion 0 of the farm Sandsloot 236 KR, Fothane Village, Mapela in the Limpopo Province.

Expanded_Motivation:

A 17km double pipeline will be constructed, that will transport rain and seepage water from the pits at the Mogalakwena Mine to a storage dam on the mine (the activity falls within the existing water use license). The two pipelines are both 450mm in diameter and will pump a maximum of 1000 litres of water per second. The pipeline falls completely within the mining area already authorised. The pipeline route follows a disturbed area and will be placed next to the existing haul roads and service roads. The pipeline will be above ground except at road crossings. The pipeline crosses a river in two places, both of these crossings already from part of the water use license. The water use license will be updated with a detailed drawing for the proposed pipeline. The existing pipeline that runs on the west of the pits will have to be moved as mining develops to the west. The proposed pipeline will replace the old pipeline, but will run to the east of the pits. The pipeline is critical for safe mining and prevents any spillages into the rivers from pits. By having the pipeline in place an increase in water recycling and re-use in the process will be possible, which is a commitment made in the Mogalakwena Mine EMPR.
