Development Type:

ProposalDescription:

Request for the relaxation of the buffer distances around one burial ground and two possible graves in close vicinity to the mining operations of the Samancor Western Chrome Waterkloof Open Cast Mine on portions of the farm Waterkloof 305JQ, close to Kroondal in the North West Province Related to Case: 16733

Expanded_Motivation:

The diagram attached (Annexure B) indicates the position of the affected graves in line with the planned mining activities. The mining layout will only affect the buffer zone of burial ground (WK006) and two possible graves (WK004 and 5). The request is to relax the 100m buffer at WK006 to approximately 20m and the two possible graves that is located close to the office parking are with a fenced buffer of 5 meters each. Currently, the graves are protected with wire and snow netting and all mining activities in the area until feedback from SAHRA is received. Our client suggests that the following additional protective measures will be implemented if the approval of the new buffer zone is accepted by SAHRA: • Permanent fencing; • Supervision while mining is being undertaken;
