Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

Excavation at Cooper's Cave, National Heritage Site, within the Cradle of Humankind

This permit is issued to Dr Steininger for the excavations in the decalcified and calcified sediments of Cooper's A; for the excavation of a new deposit at Cooper's B; for the removal of two suid molars and a large block of breccia with microfauna on the west side of Cooper's D and of craniodental remains of a juvenile Theropithecus, 
a small Papio mandible, and a complete row of aardvark metacarpals on the east side of
 Cooper's D before its closure; for the excavation of four sections until the floor is uncovered at Cooper's D to obtain a comprehensive sediment profile; for the excavation of a new deposit near Cooper's D. 

Conditions:

1. If Dr Steininger is not to be present on the site at all times then SAHRA must be provided with the names and qualifications of the authorised representatives.
2. Adequate recording methods as specified in the Regulations and Guidelines pertaining to the National Heritage Resources Act must be employed.  Note that the position of all excavations and objects collected must be marked on a plan of site.
3. A standard site record form must be lodged with the Evolutionary Studies Institute at the University of Witwatersrand.
4. All material collected and excavated, as well as field notes and records, will be curated by the Evolutionary Studies Institute at the University of Witwatersrand, who will be responsible for the permanent curation and safekeeping of all artefactual and palaeontological material in a condition that allows ongoing research.
5. When excavating overhangs the excavators should:
a) excavate from the top down to prevent destabilization of material above the area of excavation
b) avoid working directly below the laminated material
c) ensure that all laminated material is removed and no potentially destabilized material remains
d) use hard hats. 
6. It is the responsibility of Dr Steininger to ensure that any outstanding permits from the Management Authority of the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site is obtained before any activity commences on site. 
7. An annual progress report on the results of the excavations and analyses must be submitted to SAHRA on or before the end of November 2014, 2015 and 2016. A final report is due on or before the end of November 2017. SAHRA reserves the right to withhold further permits if progress is not deemed satisfactory.
8. The interim reports must include
a) a ‘Before’ and ‘After’ status quo report, including photographs of the sites worked. The excavators must make a status quo record as they begin to work so that this is possible;
b) a site plan, which shows the main site features, pits, caves, sinkholes, kilns, buildings, etc. and the heritage proclamation boundary; on which all fossil loci and all breccia dumps, old, new, and relocated, or to be relocated, are indicated with appropriate annotations as to their age and provenance where known;
c) a proposal for the long term management and closure of excavations, for example, procedures that should be followed when work at a site stops temporarily or when excavation ceases and the need to stabilize excavation edges and faces as well as for ensuring the stepping of deep cuttings; and other management issues;
d) details of new work on dating of the site and correlation of the various loci;
e) an updated list of site values and an updated statement of site significance;
f) a complete bibliographic list.
9. Reprints of all published papers or copies of theses and/or reports resulting from this work must be lodged with SAHRA.
10. If a published report has not appeared within one year of the lapsing of this permit, the report required in terms of the permit will be made available to researchers on request.
11. It is the responsibility of Dr Steininger to obtain permission from the landowner for each visit and Dr Steininger is responsible for ensuring that she has an understanding with the landowner concerning: the number of visitors and workers; conditions for camping on the property; speed limits on access roads; possible prohibitions on off-road driving; size, type and number of vehicles permitted; possible prohibitions on trespassing beyond the site; disturbing fauna, flora or substrate; erection and demolition of structures on the Site; appropriate hours of visiting and working on the Site; use of firewood, electricity and water; lighting fires and the prevention of uncontrolled fires and any fencing necessary to protect livestock. 12. Conditions of access imposed by the landowner must be observed.
13. Dr Steininger shall be responsible for the activities and impacts of all colleagues, students and employees under her supervision and for their compliance with the terms of the Heritage Agreement and the Management Plan for this site.
14. Dr Steininger must take measures to ensure the safety of any person who may enter the National Heritage Site as part of her excavation team or as her visitor.
15. It is the responsibility of Dr Steininger to protect the sites during and after excavation and to ensure that where appropriate excavations are filled in or stabilized with adequate materials to the satisfaction of SAHRA and the landowner.
16. SAHRA shall not be liable for any losses, damages or injuries to persons or properties as a result of any activities in connection with this permit.
17. SAHRA reserves the right to cancel this permit by notice to Dr Steininger.
