Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

  • A new & modernised look and layout
  • Improved site usage flows with respect to applications and content creation
  • Improved site performance and stability

Export of thirtyfive dental calculus, five long bone fragments and one sediment sample from Empire Cave UW101

This permit is for the export of thirty five hominin remains and one sediment sample from Empire Cave (UW101). The specimens will undergo analyses at the Plant Foods in Hominin Dietary Ecology Research Group at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany. Post-doctoral researcher Cynthianne Debono Spiteri will perform chemical extraction of subsamples of the calculus, and send the extractions to Dr Claudia Birkemeyer of the University of Leipzig, to be run on the GC-MS system. Further subsamples will be sent to Dr. Christina Warinner of the University of Oklahoma for DNA and protein analysis.

Conditions:

  1. The specimens must be clearly marked with accession numbers.
  2. The material must be carefully packed and all packaging must be clearly marked with the accession numbers, the name of the site, and the name and address of Dr Bernhard Zipfel at the ESI Institute or and/Dr Amanda Henry at the Max Planck Institute in Leipzig. 
  3. The material will be hand carried by Ms Chelsea Leonard, a student of Dr Henry.
  4. The samples must be kept for study purposes only, and may not be sold or exchanged.
  5. The material may not be loaned to any person or institution other than Dr Amanda Henry without the consent of SAHRA.
  6. The material will be sent to Dr. Christina Warinner of the University of Oklahoma for DNA and protein analyses. The material must be hand carried or sent via a reputable courier. 
  7. A report on the activities undertaken in terms of this permit must be lodged with SAHRA before the end of February 2015.
  8. Copies of any papers that may result from the export of the material must be lodged with SAHRA. 
  9. SAHRA shall not be liable for any losses, damages or injuries to persons or properties as a result of any activities in connection with this permit.
  10. SAHRA reserves the right to cancel this permit by notice to the permit holder.
