Conditions:
For temporary export of the following 2 objects: StW 389 hominin distal tibia; StW 431 hominin distal humerus
This permit refers to partial long bone material (1 tibia and 1 humerus) of a hominin from the Sterkfontein Member 4, which is between 2 to 3 million years old. The humerus belongs to a partial skeleton. The material is considered useful for synchrotron scanning due to the non-destructive nature of this method and the detailed amount of histological data expected to be analysed.
The permit is issued to Dr Kristian J. Carlson, Evolutionary Studies Institute, University of the Witwatersrand, in collaboration with Dr Paul Tafforeau (Beamline Responsible at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility), Dr Song Xing (Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology), and Dr Lorena Havill (Texas Biomedical Research Institute) to export two objects for scanning of a tibia and humerus from hominin specimens at the European Synchrotron Radiation facility in Grenoble, France.
Conditions:
1. Only the selected representative of the material stored in the collection may be exported.
2. The material must be carefully packed and all packaging must be clearly marked with the name of the site (if known), and the name and address of the permit holder or the ESI.
3. The material must be hand-carried by Dr K. J. Carlson.
4. Dr K. J. Carlson is responsible for the analysis of the material and its transport to and from the above mentioned institutions/collections.
5. Dr K. J. Carlson is responsible for the cost of the return of the specimens.
6. The samples must be kept for study purposes only, and may not be sold or exchanged.
7. The material may not be loaned to any person or institution other than the above stated participants in the study, without the consent of SAHRA.
8. No destructive analysis or sampling may be undertaken.
9. A report on the activities undertaken in terms of this permit must be lodged with SAHRA before 31 July 2016.
10. Copies of any papers that may result from the export of the material must be lodged with SAHRA.
11. SAHRA shall not be liable for any losses, damages or injuries to persons or properties as a result of any activities in connection with this permit.
12. SAHRA reserves the right to cancel this permit by notice to the permit holder.
13. The material must be returned by the date the permit expires.
