Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

  • A new & modernised look and layout
  • Improved site usage flows with respect to applications and content creation
  • Improved site performance and stability

For destructive sampling and permanent export of samples of three specimens from Plovers Lake (Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site):

PL 12780 (hominin long bone fragment); PL 14000A (hominin incisor); PV14560 (bovid tooth)

The permit is issued to Bernhard Zipfel (Evolutionary Studies Institute, University of the Witwatersrand), on behalf of Dr Mattias Jakobsson (Department of Evolutionary Biology, Uppsala University, Sweden) in collaboration with Helena Jankovic Malmström (Department of Evolutionary Biology, Uppsala University, Sweden), Carina Schlebusch (Department of Evolutionary Biology, Uppsala University, Sweden) and Dr Marlize Lomdard (Anthropology and Development Studies, University of Johannesburg), to sample two hominin and one bovid specimen from Plovers Lake and permanently export the samples  for C14 dating at Beta Analytic Ltd, London BioScience Innovation Centre, London, UK. The material is currently housed at the Evolutionary Studies Institute, University of the Witwatersrand.

Conditions:

1. Only the selected representatives of the material stored in the collection may be exported.

2. The material must be carefully packed and all packaging must be clearly marked with the name of the site (if known), and the name and address of the permit holder or the Evolutionary Studies Institute, University of the Witwatersrand.

3. The material will be hand-carried by Prof Marlize Lombard, University of Johannesburg.

4. Prof Marlize Lombard, University of Johannesburg is responsible for the transport to the above mentioned institutions/collections.

5.Dr Mattias Jakobsson, Helena Jankovic Malmström and Carina Schlebusch are responsible for the analysis of the material.

6. The samples must be used for study purposes only, and may not be sold or exchanged.

7. The material may not be loaned to any person or institution other than the above stated participants in the study, without the consent of SAHRA.

8. Destructive analysis or sampling may be undertaken.

9. A report on the activities undertaken in terms of this permit must be lodged with SAHRA before 31 May 2018.

10. Copies of any papers that may result from the export of the material must be lodged with SAHRA.

11. SAHRA shall not be liable for any losses, damages or injuries to persons or properties as a result of any activities in connection with this permit.

12. SAHRA reserves the right to cancel this permit by notice to the permit holder.
