Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

  • A new & modernised look and layout
  • Improved site usage flows with respect to applications and content creation

History: The town of Aliwal North owes its existence mainly to two of the oldest and most convenient drifts through the Orange River that formerly provided access between the Cape Colony and the Transgariep. Consequently it was of special strategic importance in times of war and particularly during the Anglo Boer War. The solid old blockhouse in De Wetsville south of the town bears witness to this.
The blockhouse was part of the exceptionally strong defence line which was designed to resist the republican commandos that attacked this part of the Colony from the Orange Free State from time to time. It stood in close relationship with the blockhouse at Burgersdorp.
