Conditions:

The Maritime and Underwater Cultural Heritage (MUCH) unit at the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA) is pleased to issue the abovementioned permit.

The following terms and conditions apply:

1. If the permit holder is not present on the site at all times, SAHRA must be provided with the names and qualifications of her authorised representative(s).

2. Work must be limited to the rescue relocation of the wreckage of Commodore II, which is currently located at approximately -33.886791, 18.488473 and must be placed at -33.890824, 18.484872. This permit is issued solely for the works outlined in the Method Statement which is attached to the application, and no activities beyond those outlined in the method statement may be carried out without the express permission of SAHRA.

3. This permit gives the holder the sole right to conduct rescue relocation of the wreckage of Commodore II for the duration of the permit period.

4. This permit does not exempt the holder from obtaining all necessary additional permits, approvals, or consent for any activities in connection with the work (e.g. road closures).

5. It is the responsibility of the permit holder to ensure that all works are strictly monitored at all times. The permit holder is responsible for ensuring that no debris, whether directly originating from the wreckage or not, is left along any part of the transportation route, and for ensuring that, apart from the absence or presence of the wreck, the lift site, transportation route, and lay-down area are returned to the same condition as they were prior to the works.

6. Should pieces of wreckage be dislodged from the wreckage at any time during works, these pieces must be carefully collected, and their point(s) of origin recorded. Such pieces must be kept in a safe place until feedback has been received from SAHRA.

7. If there is cause for concern that the wreckage may be significantly damaged by any activities in connection with this permit at any time during works, work must cease and SAHRA must be informed. In this event, work may not commence until feedback has been received from SAHRA.

8. The lay-down area must be thoroughly inspected prior to placing the wreckage on the base stones. Upon placing the wreckage at the lay-down area, all efforts must be made to ensure that it is placed in such a way as to prevent further movement.

9. The Method Statement attached to the case application must be followed meticulously at all times.

10. Adequate recording methods must be employed during all work under this permit. Photographs and, if available, video footage captured by the permit holder must be submitted to SAHRA within two (2) months of the conclusion of the rescue relocation, together with the report referred to directly below.

11. A final report on the results of the rescue relocation must be submitted to SAHRA within two (2) months of the conclusion of the rescue relocation.

12. Reprints of all published papers and/or copies of theses and/or reports resulting from this work must be lodged with SAHRA.

13. If a published report has not appeared within three years of the lapsing of this permit, the report required in terms of the permit will be made available to researchers on request.

14. SAHRA shall not be liable for any losses, damages or injuries to properties or persons, regardless of whether they are under the employ of the permit holder, volunteering their assistance with the works, or members of the public, as a result of any activities in connection with this permit.

15. SAHRA reserves the right to cancel this permit by notice to the permit holder.

16. A person who wishes to appeal the decision to grant this permit may do so within fourteen (14) days of the issuing of this permit.
