Conditions:

The Maritime and Underwater Cultural Heritage (MUCH) unit at the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA) is pleased to issue the abovementioned permit.

The following terms and conditions apply:

1. If the permit holder is not present on the site at all times, SAHRA must be provided with the names and qualifications of his authorised representative(s).

2. Work must be limited to the archaeological survey and recording of the wreck site known as “the Nahoon Point wreck” as well as geophysical investigation including possible Sidescan Sonar and Magnetometer surveys. The survey may only be carried out within the defined set of geographical coordinates provided on Page 12 of the permit proposal, which together constitute the four corners of a polygon that shall hereafter be referred to as the 'survey area', and which is bound by the high water mark on the landward side.

3. This permit gives the holder the sole authorisation to conduct a pre-disturbance survey consisting of a seabed survey and recording of the site as well as geophysical investigation at the above location to document and record the remains of the unidentified wreck known as “the Nahoon Point wreck” for the duration of the permit period.

4. Equipment permitted on site must be limited to what is needed to conduct an archaeological survey and recording of the wreck site known as “the Nahoon Point wreck” as well as geophysical investigation including possible Sidescan Sonar and Magnetometer surveys.

5. This permit does not grant the holder authorisation to disturb any archaeological material and is solely limited to a non-intrusive survey of the wreck. Should archaeological material be accidentally disturbed during the course of the survey, SAHRA must be informed immediately. In this event, work must cease and may not commence until feedback has been received from SAHRA.

6. Should any heritage material be identified as being associated with any heritage resource other than the wreck being investigated as stated on this permit, the MUCH Unit at SAHRA must be informed immediately. An area around any such locality may be subsequently excluded from the survey area referred to in (2) at the discretion of SAHRA.

7. Adequate recording methods must be employed during all work under this permit. The survey data and results must be submitted to the MUCH Unit at SAHRA together with the permit report referred to in (9).

8. A detailed log book must be kept to record daily progress, the mapping, location and features of the site, and sea and weather conditions. This information must be submitted to the MUCH Unit at SAHRA on request.

9. A final report on the results of the survey must be submitted to SAHRA within two (2) months of the expiry of this permit. Should the work be completed before the expiry of this permit, the final report shall be due within two (2) months of the last day of work undertaken under the authority of this permit.

10. Reprints of all published papers and/or copies of theses and/or reports resulting from this work must be lodged with SAHRA.

11. If a published report has not appeared within three years of the lapsing of this permit, the report required in terms of the permit may be made available to researchers on request provided suitable motivation is given.

12. SAHRA shall not be liable for any losses, damages or injuries to properties or persons, regardless of whether they are under the employ of the permit holder, volunteering their assistance with the works, or members of the public, as a result of any activities in connection with this permit.

13. SAHRA reserves the right to cancel this permit by notice to the permit holder.

14. A person who wishes to appeal the decision to grant this permit may do so within fourteen (14) days of the issuing of this permit.

15. The activities approved under the authority of this permit may be carried out between 14 July 2020 and 14 January 2022.
