Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

  • A new & modernised look and layout
  • Improved site usage flows with respect to applications and content creation
  • Improved site performance and stability

This permit is issued to Prof. Justing Bradfield (Palaeo-Science Institute, University of Johannesburg) for collecting chemical residue of medicinal and poisonous horns and quivers for analysis from bone and tools from ancient archaeological deposits.  The materials are currently housed  at the University of the Witwatersrand, Archaeology Department and Ditsong Museum of Cultural History.

1.  Only the selected representatives of the materials stored in the collections may be used in the study.

3. The material will be studied and analysed at the Centre for Plant Metabolomics, University of Johannesburg, where Prof. Ian Dubery will be responsible for the analysis.

4. Prof. Justin Bradfied is responsible for the transport of the material from the above-mentioned institutions/collections.

5. The samples must be used for study purposes only and may not be sold or exchanged. 

7. 10mg of residual sample will be collected, destructive analysis or sampling is not permitted.

4. A permit report on the activities undertaken in terms of this permit must be emailed to apmpermitreports@sahra.org.za before 31 July 2023 using the template in the following link: https://sahris.sahra.org.za/content/apmpermitreports. SAHRA reserves the right to withhold further permits if progress is not deemed satisfactory. Permit reports can be made available to researchers on request within three years of the lapsing of this permit.

5. Copies of all the published papers and/or reports resulting from this work must be lodged with the heritage authority.

6. SAHRA shall not be liable for any losses, damages or injuries by or to persons or properties as a result of any activities in connection with this permit.

7. SAHRA reserves the right to cancel this permit by notice to the permit holder.

8. This permit is subject to a general appeal and may be suspended should an appeal against the decisions be received by SAHRA within 14 days from the date of the permit. SAHRA may not be held responsible for any costs or losses incurred in the event of the suspension or retraction of this permit.

9. Request to renew permits must be done at least two months prior to the expiry of the existing permit.
