Changes to SAHRIS!

The South African Heritage Resources Information System (SAHRIS) has undergone a generational upgrade and restructure. These changes to the site include, but are not limited to:

  • A new & modernised look and layout
  • Improved site usage flows with respect to applications and content creation
  • Improved site performance and stability

Launch for the new version of SAHRIS occurred on Monday the 30th of October 2023.

Directions: 

Down the road into Umgeni valley from Botha's Hill, and drive and walk as far as possible along the right bank of R. Umgeni as far as The Narrows. Elevation:

SiteComments: 

On right bank of R. Umgeni terraces and gravels appear down a long ridge: Just above the river is a 40' silt-terrace with basal gravel. No artefacts found in or on this.
There is a scatter of pebbles at 250'. This terrace showes well downstream on left bank at SBP 277126, S29 38 33 E30 47 25. Perhaps the equivalent of Terrace II above Drummond. This site is close to 2930DB 018 but much higher up the slope.
Collected 1 very crude rolled hand-axe, probably Acheulian I; 2 unrolled picks, may be Acheulian II; a gouge-cleaver, perhaps Acheulian or later, neatly made with gouge-blow at each end. Much abraded by weathering.
