Description

ObjectFormType:

  • Iron screws

Colours:

  • Brown red

DistinguishingFeatures:

Nine iron screws with “SAR” (South African Rialway) and SAS (Suid-Afrikaanse Spoorweë). SAR NB 1953, can be read on some of the screws.

The screws from the Mona Halt Railway that are marked “SAR” may have been used to fix the corrugated iron sheets onto timber roof trestles. However screws of this type are generally used to screw the “small steel plate chairs” holding the rails to wooden sleepers (Martins, Bruno 13 July 2018 per e-mail).

Screws marked “SAR” refers to the South African Railways and screws marked “NGR” refers to  Natal Government Railways. The latter was later incorporated into the Union in 1910 (Martins, Bruno 13 July 2018 per e-mail).
