History: Fort Wynyard was erected in 1860 near the site where the Dutch East India Company's battery "Kyk in de Pot", which was dismantled between 1825 and 1827, stood. The fort was named after Lt-Gen. R. H. Wynyard, the then Lieutenant-Governor of the Cape Colony, and was reorganised in 1890.
