History: This U-shaped hospital building, which was erected shortly before the Seventh Frontier War (1846-1847), was designed by Captain J. E. Walpole of the Royal Engineers. From the 1870s when the British Army vacated the premises, until 1950 it was used as a magistrate’s residence. At present the building serves as stores and lecture rooms for the Provincial Hospital complex. The hospital in question, replaced the one built in 1822-1823, situated on the original Military Post site. This hospital is therefore not only a very important relic of the history of the Royal Engineers and British sojourn in South Africa, but also forms an integral component of the historic core of Fort Beaufort.
Also of interest is the fact that since the departure of the Military Forces from Fort Beaufort in the 187O up to 1950 the hospital building was used as a residence for the local magistrate. It now forms part of the Provincial Hospital complex and is used as stores and lecture rooms for the training of nurses.
