History: The Residency is a well preserved model of the early 19th Century H-planned gable house which, together with the impressive Reinet House, form a unique architectural group at the end of Parsonage Street. Text

The Residency or official house of the Landdrost of Graaff-Reinet stands in Pastorie Street, opposite the beautifully restored Reinet House. It was originally the ‘tuishuis’ or town dwelling of the Rubidge family, a family whose history is intimately associated with that of Graaff-Reinet.
This house with its decorative gables and built in the shape clan H, is an outstanding example of the old Cape- Dutch architecture of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. As long ago as 1957, when he completed the restoration of Reinet House, the well-known architect Norman Eaton pleaded for the Residency to be preserved and restored. ‘Together with Reinet House,’ he said, ‘it would be of unique value not only for Graaff-Reinet but for the country as a whole, seeing that this concept of an historical unit has almost died out in this country.’
The house has been preserved on account of its architectural qualities. The Residency and Reinet House together form a unique architectural entity in Graaff Reinet.
