History: This U-shaped building was erected largely in 1849 as an Officers' Mess at a time when King William's Town formed the centre of the Frontier Wars and accommodated a large garrison. The building was used as a mess until 1884, after which it served, inter alia, as a dwelling for the Paymaster, the Inspector General and a Military Chaplain.
