History: In 1828 the Government under Lord Charles Somerset drew up plans for a village on a portion of George Rex’s estate, which eventually developed into Knysna. Facing the road which later became the main street, George Rex gave a morgen of land (0,8 ha) as a site for an Anglican church, but the building of the church only began in 1849, ten years after his death. In April of that year the foundation stone was laid by his second son, John. Stone was brought from the immediate neighbourhood, but money was scarce and by the following year the walls were still only half built. Renewed efforts were made, especially by the three Rex brothers, to raise the necessary funds and at last the work was completed by a team of builders especially brought out by Bishop Robert Gray for his church-building programme.
The church was planned in accordance with an ancient English design, but only a part of it was ever built. The part that was eventually completed and still survives is in fact only the chancel of the church as it was planned. On the western side the arch for the nave was completed, but it was built up with bricks until the money for extensions could be found. The excellent stonework, the fine workmanship of the corners and the buttresses and windows are especially noteworthy.
The little church was consecrated by Bishop Gray on 3rd October, 1855. In the l a new St. George’s Church was built close-by, but the older building has recently been restored. It stands in spacious grounds amidst the graves of many old inhabitants of Knysna, including George Rex’s second wife and several of his children, and provides a dignified, restful and historical focus for this attractive town.
