History: This U-shaped building has a feature peculiar to Hottentots Holland; namely a front gable with small distinctive ‘thumb wings’ reduced to the width of the edge- mould only.
The Police Station, originally a dwelling-house, probably dates from between 1835 and 1850. It is one of the few old buildings with any charm remaining in Somerset West.
During the years 1878 to 1902, the property was owned by Mr. George Tubb, who ran small private school in the house and prior to the opening of a new Court House, cum Post Office in 1897 a room was used for the purpose of a Post Office.
At the start of the twentieth century it became the property of H.S. Austin the editor of Somerset West’s first newspaper. During the nineteen-twenties it housed the Somerset West Public Library.
