History: Near the place where the road to Tshipise leaves the main road, another road turns off to the west and goes to the Mopani railway station. Barely six km west of the station, on the farm Verdun, there is a steep, rocky koppie with more Bavenda ruins. Here again sturdy walls catch the eye. The wall of the Kgotla or Council Chamber has a very typical recessed seat for the Chief, and behind it, on the opposite side of the wall, there is a short piece of chequer-board patterning.
The Verdun, Machemma and Dzata ruins are important links in the proto-history of South Africa and are of great importance to archaeologists as well as ethnologists.
