History: About 24 kilometres from Ladysmith, along the national road to the north, the road to Elandslaagte and Wasbank turns off sharply to the right. On the farm Uithoek near Wasbank there is a house in which the Voortrekker Karel Landman lived from 1852 to 1875.
Karel Pieter Landman (1796-1875) originally came from the neighbourhood of Uitenhage, but moved to Olifantshoek (now Alexandria), where he lost all he had during the Sixth Xhosa War. In October, 1837, he led a party of Voortrekkers from the Cape Colony to Natal. After the murder of Piet Retief he took part in the tragic expedition of Uys and Potgieter during April, 1838, and in May he accompanied Maritz on a visit to Port Natal and took possession of the port in the name of the emigrant farmers. In June he was elected as a commandant to relieve Maritz of some of his duties.
Some time later Landman and his party moved to Port Natal where they lived in the so-called ‘Laager of poles’ at the mouth of the Umgeni River. On the death of Maritz, Landman became the recognised leader of the Voortrekkers in Natal, until the arrival of Andries Pretorius. In December, 1838, he acted as Second Commandant, trekked past Wasbank with Pretorius’s ‘Wenkommando’ and took part in the Battle of Blood River.
After this commando had visited Dingane’s Kraal, Landman and a large number of men were ambushed by the Zulus in the valley of the White Umfolozi River, but with the assistance of Hans de Lange he managed to save the commando, suffering only light casualties.
Landman was known as a good builder ever since he had lived in the Cape Colony and he probably built this house with his own hands. He lived in it until he died, was buried from there, and his grave is not far away.
The house was severely damaged by fire some time ago but it is being restored.
